We all know how Music makes us feel but have you ever wondered exactly what it does to your brain and how your brain responds to it? I’ve found some interesting facts on this topic and thought I’d share it with you. When we listen to music, it is processed in many parts of the brain. Until the early nineties when brain imaging came into play, we had no idea of the extent of the human brains involvement. Here is a list of the major computational centres and what they control.
1. Motor Cortex – This is the part of the brain that controls foot tapping, dancing and playing an instrument
2. Sensory Cortex – This part receives the feedback thats is created from playing an instrument and dancing
3. Auditory Cortex – The first stages of listening to sounds. The perception and analysis of tones
4. Hippocampus – Memory for music. Musical experiences and contexts
5. Visual Cortex – Reading Music, looking at a performers or one’s own movements
6. Cerebellum – Movement such as foot tapping, dancing and playing an instrument. Also involved in emotional reactions to music
7. Amygdala – Emotional reactions to music
8. Nucleus Accumbens – Emotional reactions to music
9. Prefrontal Cortex – Creation of expectations, violation and satisfaction of expectations
10. Sensory Cortex – Tactile feedback from playing an instrument and dancing
According to some scientists. Music can predict our personality traits. This is what they came up with in a study conducted at Heriot-Watt University. (Not my own Opinion…I tend to disagree with a few of these)
