More than just another addition to the bottomless pit of archival footage dedicated to legend, man, myth and flawed mortal that was Johnny Cash, MY FATHER AND THE MAN IN BLACK tells the universal and troubling tale of the very real walls that parents can build around themselves. Filled with great music, oodles of exclusive visuals and seamless re-creations of the past, the narrative is strong, exposing more faces of the multifaceted Man In Black himself than ever before. It seems that drugs and drink weren’t the real cause of Cash’s professional self-destruction. Refreshingly, MY FATHER AND THE MAN IN BLACK does not slip into the realm of tabloid. “It’s an intense personal adventure with universal themes and appeal that just happens to feature one of 20th-century music’s great icons”, reports Ambrose Roche, NXNE Film Programmer.

This must-see documentary is unlike anything you’ve seen before. Written and directed by the son of Johnny’s former manager, Saul Holiff (1960 to 1973), the movie has earned international acclaim. MY FATHER AND THE MAN IN BLACK is the winner of Best Feature Documentary, EDINDOCS Documentary Film Festival, Edinburgh (2012), Best Music Documentary, Radar Hamburg Independent Film Festival (2012) plus Official Selection, Vancouver International Film Festival (2012), Copenhagen International Documentary Festival (2012), London Raindance Film Festival (2012), Toronto NXNE Music & Film Festival (2012), Florence Festival Dei Popoli (2012) and Cork Ireland Film Festival (2012).

Providing the voice of JOHNNY CASH in the film “My Father and The Man in Black”, DAVID JAMES proves he is the most authentic JOHNNY CASH tribute artist in the business. A living prodigy to one of history’s true phenomenons, he is . . . . . almost JOHNNY CASH! Taking the stage with his own three-part band, BIG RIVER, James has the stage presence and the characteristic sound of JOHNNY CASH nailed down. With the look, the moves and the sound, he does Johnny proud as he recreates such hits as “Folsom Prison Blues”, “Ring of Fire”, “Hey Porter”, “Rock Island Line”, “Get Rhythm”, “The Long Black Veil”, “Daddy Sang Bass”, “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down”, “A Boy Named Sue”, “Man In Black”, “Walk The Line” and his signature piece “Orange Blossom Special” as well as Johnny’s crossover songs “Hurt” and “Rusty Cage”.

Steven Hill, entertainment reporter for The Question says, “When the deep and eerily familiar voice on the phone says, “Hello, this is… almost, Johnny Cash,” it takes a second to register that the person on the other end of the line is really DAVID JAMES and not the real Man in Black.” PETER GABRIEL, singer, songwriter and musician declares, “David has a voice very close to JOHNNY CASH himself and he’s a great performer”. Mark Corbett of the Nanaimo Business Association concludes, “If you were to close your eyes while watching a performance of the tribute band DAVID JAMES & BIG RIVER, you’d swear JOHNNY CASH was up on stage. Even with your eyes open, the spirit of the “Man in Black” is definitely in the room. This is a must see performance for anyone who’s a fan of country music’s most provocative entertainer.”
